Interests and hobbies
How my garden grows
In the last handful of years I have developed a serious passion for gardening. What started as a way to get some fresh vegetables while enjoying the feat of growing them myself, has blossomed into a tradition of starting plants from seeds, making upgrades to 2 gardens that have grown to total around 500 sq ft, and most recently my completion of the URI Master Gardener program.
Postmodern man
Growing up I spent a lot of time at my Grandparent’s house, where it seemed they kept every home decor item and widget from the last 50 years boxed away in the basement. At some point I started going through those boxes, finding all sorts of interesting objects. Things from when they bought the house in the 1950’s, from when my Mom was a teen in the 60’s, stuff from the ceramics shop they owned in the 70’s, even some of my own childhood toys from the 80’s and 90’s had found there way down there. It’s no surprise then that I have a love and appreciation of objects and ephemera from the postmodern era.
The family archivist
Thanks to a love of history and my Grandma’s trust in me as a thoughtful keeper of things, I have found myself the semi-official family archivist. This means cataloging, storing, and scanning the many meaningful items a family produces through the years, like photographs and address books, letters from distant relatives, and even my Grandpa’s WW2 Navy papers and uniform. In the last year I’ve made a serious effort to scan many of the thousands of family photos and paper documents I’ve been entrusted with.
My Artwork
Another way I get my creative fix is by making 3-dimensional mixed media artwork. I love taking an idea, feeling, or observation, and using raw materials or repurposing existing ones to create something unique and thought provoking.
I have participated in a handful of gallery exhibitions in RI and elsewhere. Much of my work is personal in nature, such as the pieces exploring my Grandparents’ lives and our relationships with each other.
